SLOPE

Area Map

POWDER AREA

Entire area: 65 hectares.

1.Hiyama (ungroomed course)
Considered Japan's longest non-stop powder area. Slope variations and grades all make for a totally satisfying ride!
2.Sage (ungroomed course)
Like the course name, this course undulates like plants in the breeze—use the terrain to create great lines and new ways to have fun! With an excellent field of vision and beautiful scenery, this is an area where you can enjoy a high-speed run.
3. Oredani (ungroomed course)
Depending on your entry point, there are countless lines to choose from, while the heavily forested course makes this an area for the expert—it's important to keep an eye out for others on the course. Descend too far and it can be difficult to emerge from the course; we suggest leaving where the slope moderates, via the Snowman course.
4.Cool (ungroomed course)
Access this course from Snowman to Princess and test your ungroomed snow technique!
5.Princess (ungroomed course)
One of the best powder courses in Japan for length and slope angle.
Nature (ungroomed course)
If the Hiyama course seems too challenging, escape to the open slopes of Nature. The course does have challenging slope variation, though—don't take it too lightly!
7.Princess Bowl (ungroomed course)
Enter and avoid the sugi forest. Few trees along the course make this a fun area, but there are several major shifts in course angle midway, so do be careful! An easy exit leads onto a gentle slope.
8.High Tribe (ungroomed course)
A classic tree run, this one is a lot of fun! A mellow, enjoyable ride, but keep an eye for others on the course. The slope is roughly canted to one direction, so boarders may want to choose a regular stance.
9.Jackson (ungroomed course)
The entry here is fairly tree-covered, which can make it hard to find but once you do an open slope awaits in the top section. As you travel down the course it narrows to a valley shape and becomes more tree-covered, so keep keep an eye out as you enjoy the changes in terrain.
10.Zen (ungroomed course)
On the east side of High Tribe; entry is on skiers' right, past the maintenance road. Compared to the High Tribe's tree run, Zen is more mellow, with a few trees and open areas.

PISTE AREA

Total length: 4,959 meters; total area: 29 hectares

11.Snowman
This is a groomed slope, but this long course is no place to lose your attention. If you have the leg power, this is a course that won't disappoint!
12.Mail
At a maximum slope angle of 29degrees, this is the steepest groomed slope. The upper section is a wide-open course, with the lower steep section becoming a bump run in the spring.
13.Raisin
This is Charmant's course especially for racing gate use, but there are times when it is open for everyone. Our course for the gate-bashers!
14.Volley
A full 1,623 meters in length, this is the longest run on the hill. With an average slope angle of just 8°, even beginners can enjoy skiing down from the top of the mountain.
15.Evian
A wide, open intermediate slope. A great place for improving while riding right along the ski lift; it's an easy-access place to ski.
16.Lower Mail
This course can be clearly seen from the ski center, making this a great place for beginners to practice.

POWDER AREA RULE

Charmant Hiuchi Snow Resort is one of the few ski areas in Japan where the natural contours of the land have been left as they are and where you can really enjoy the deep powder. But, while the area is natural, there are risks involved that everyone should keep in mind. These include collisions with trees, very deep snow, avalanches, tree holes, large drops, cracks in the snow, and others—things that, if you aren’t careful about, can result in injury or death. Every skier or boarder needs to have consciousness about the dangers, and a sense of caution as well.

With the recent growth of interest in ungroomed areas and backcountry skiing and boarding, Japan has also seen an increasing number of avalanche and mountain-related accidents. In most all cases, these are human-induced accidents—miscalculations, or the result of a lack of technique or skills—so better awareness and self-judgment could help to avoid many avalanches or terrain-related accidents.

  1. Powder Rule
  2. We recommend that every skier and boarder have insurance
  3. Always check the information written on the white boards at the ski center!
  4. For more detailed information, talk to the ski patrol
  5. Take time to carefully review the area map and memorize the courses you will be on
  6. Learn how to use an avalanche beacon, shovel and probe
  7. Do not approach marked hazards such as overhanging snow, cracks and other dangerous areas
  8. If you see something happen, be sure to contact the ski patrol
  9. Be sure to check on changing weather and avalanche conditions before you head out
  10. As much as possible, don’t go out alone. The basic rule is to be in a position where others in your party can always hear your voice
  11. Deep snow is great fun, but there is always the danger of suffocation after a hard fall—understand the danger, and think about how to respond
Slope angle
The slopes that are the most fun to ski—from 30 to 40 degrees—are also the most likely to avalanche
Terrain traps
Be especially careful in bowls, valleys, near overhanging snow, where cracks have been reported, near tree holes and on convex slopes.
Beware of changes in snow condition!
Snow conditions can change very drastically due to wind transport, solar radiation, and will be quite different from the snow in areas that are not as affected by these factors. Understand that the snow quality is always changing, and adjust your thinking accordingly!
Use of a transceiver or amateur handheld radio is recommended
Please tune transceivers to Channel 8 in the Charmant Hiuchi area (for amateur radio, please check with the patrol on duty, or see the information board for the suggested frequency). This will allow you to periodically check on ski area information. The ski patrol also continuously monitors these frequencies so they can quickly respond in an emergency. (Coverage may not extend over the entire area, however; if you do hear news of an injury, etc., please forward the information if needed.)
・Recent avalanches on similar slopes
Avalanches have recently occurred on slopes with the same angle and aspect, making the likelihood of more avalanches greater.
・Whumping noises
The sound that occurs when a weak layer within the snowpack collapses, signaling dangerous conditions.
・ Shooting cracks
Cracks that suddenly shoot out from the edges of the ski or board; this is another indication of snow that is not well consolidated.
・ Recent wind loading
Wind can deposit large amount of snow on the lee side (away from the wind) of ridges and other terrain; this snow can be very dense and, where there are large differences in the kinds of snow, can result in weak layers and increased avalanche danger.
